Karolinska researchers recommend new routine for protection against infection during PEG

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet recommends a new routine for protection against infection when percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), a tube for feeding directly through the abdominal wall, is surgically inserted in the stomach. The new routine is both simpler and cheaper than the one used today. The method, presented in the British Medical Journal, has been clinically tested on over 200 patients at the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, Stockholm County, Sweden.

DMARD not superior to oral therapy in long-term treatment of patients with JIA

A retrospective analysis of methotrexate (MTX) safety data found that injection of this disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) was not superior to oral therapy in long-term treatment of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Findings published in Arthritis Care & Research, a peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), suggest that with similar efficacy and tolerability the more comfortable oral approach may be more suitable to treat pediatric arthritis patients.

Joslin announces fundraisers to benefit diabetes research

The importance of the research and clinical care work at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston has been affirmed by a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicting that one-third of all U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050 if current trends continue.

Providing aid is not an overly generous act

Noting that aid "has mixed impacts," Jonathan Glennie, a research fellow with the Overseas Development Institute, writes in the Guardian's "Poverty Matters Blog" that "there is one argument against aid that we need to tackle head on; the idea that we cannot afford aid, that we are being over-generous, especially in a time of cuts at home."

Babies born to obese mothers may have an increased risk of asthma, according to data from a new study to be presented on May 19 at the 105th International Conference of the American Thoracic Society in San Diego.
