New device for accurately placing hemodialysis catheters on kidney patients

Researchers at Okayama University report in The Journal of Vascular Access a supporting device for accurately placing hemodialysis catheters on kidney patients. The device was successfully used on a group of 10 patients and is expected to become an essential tool in situations where other, catheter-free hemodialysis approaches are not possible.

USPTO terminates interference proceeding in favor of PDL's '089 Patent

PDL BioPharma, Inc. today announced that on December 15, 2010, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (the PTO) terminated its interference proceeding between certain claims of the Company's Queen et al., U.S. Patent No. 5,585,089, (the '089 Patent) and certain pending claims of Adair et al., U.S. Application No. 08/846,658, (the '658 Application) in favor of the Company's '089 Patent.

Acute stress modifies DNA methylation and activity of certain genes

Acute stress alters the methylation of the DNA and thus the activity of certain genes. This is reported by researchers at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum together with colleagues from Basel, Trier and London for the first time in the journal Translational Psychiatry. "The results provide evidence how stress could be related to a higher risk of mental or physical illness", says Prof. Dr. Gunther Meinlschmidt from the Clinic of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the LWL University Hospital of the RUB.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation: Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also referred to as rehabilitation medicine, is the medical specialty concerned with diagnosing, evaluating, and treating patients with physical disabilities.
