Researchers have found that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be sufficient for the routine surveillance of some great vessel (primary blood vessels [e.g., aorta and vena cavae]) stents that are commonly used to treat congenital heart defects (a defect in the structure of the heart and great vessels that is present at birth) in children and young adults, according to a study in the October issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology (www.ajronline.org). MRI is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.
Researchers know that feeding some patients intravenously can save their lives - but also can cause liver damage. Now scientists at the University of Colorado and Children's Hospital Colorado have figured out the likely culprit, one of the ingredients in intravenous food, behind the liver problems.
In today's ageing population, resulting in a rising prevalence of chronic diseases such as neurodegeneration, the need for simple, non-invasive methods to diagnose or screen for important medical conditions becomes more and more relevant. Objective and cost-effective approaches capable of diagnosing early-stage disease in point-of-care clinical settings are necessary to facilitate the personalising of therapies to prevent or slow down pathology development.
