Aiming to identify new therapeutic strategies for the aggressive hematological disease T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey resident researcher Daniel Herranz Benito, PhD, along with collaborators from Princeton University, found a new drug that has therapeutic effect against T-ALL by inhibiting SHMT and is complementary to standard-of-care treatment.
Though the recent UNICEF report on child mortality shows progress is being made in every region to prevent childhood deaths, "it is clear that we still need to increase the coverage of high-impact, low-cost interventions like vaccines, including those for pneumonia and diarrhea that are rolling out," Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The current special issue of Technology and Innovation - Proceedings of the National Academy of Inventors, devoted to studies on medical technology and health care delivery, focuses on a wide range of topics, from new technologies to reduce the cost of health care to understanding the human microbiome.
A nationwide consortium of scientists has reported the first comprehensive genetic analysis of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, a common type of lung cancer responsible for about 400,000 deaths each year.
