It is Australia's turn to get a new National Health Performance Authority after the Victorian Government abandoned its opposition to the creation of the body. According to sources in a meeting of federal, state and territory health ministers in Melbourne this week all groups have agreed in principle to the establishment of the authority which will monitor and report on the performance of hospitals and health services.
Lead author of the study Rita Peila, Ph.D., an epidemiologist at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), said "For every year of hypertension treatment, there is increased protection against dementia."
Researchers at the University of Sheffield and Boston's Children Hospital, Harvard Medical School have created a robot that can be implanted into the body to aid the treatment of esophageal atresia, a rare birth defect that affects a baby's esophagus.
A team of scientists from the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), the Institut de G-n-tique et de Biologie Moleculaire et Cellulaire (Strassbourg France), and the Institut Albert Bonniot (Grenoble, France) have made an important finding on how genes are regulated. The Washington Post: "Amid high unemployment and a weak economy, employers have been shifting health care costs to workers, according to a study released Thursday. The premiums that employees pay for employer-sponsored family coverage rose an average of 13.7 percent this year, while the amount that employers contribute fell by 0.9 percent, the survey found.
