The world is on track to meet the poverty reduction target of the Millennium Development Goals, but sub-Saharan Africa still lags behind, according to the World Bank's World Development Indicators 2010 report, released Tuesday, VOA News reports (Hennessey, 4/20).
The Washington Post examines how high rates of malnutrition among Somali children - approximately 36 percent under age five are malnourished and almost 16 percent are severely malnourished, according to Somalia's Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit - are "the biggest test yet of recent improvements in assessing and treating malnutrition, changes that range from the coordination of care to the ingredients of food aid."
Researchers from CalciMedica, Inc. and the University of Liverpool today announced the publication of a paper describing positive effects of calcium release-activated calcium (CRAC) channel inhibitors in animal models of acute pancreatitis. The paper, titled "Inhibitors of ORAI1 prevent cytosolic calcium-associated injury of human pancreatic acinar cells and acute pancreatitis in 3 mouse models" appears in the August edition of the journal Gastroenterology.
