Environmental tobacco smoke exposure in utero and during early childhood-;especially secondhand smoke-;is associated with decreased childhood lung function, according to research presented at the ATS 2021 International Conference.
New research by Canadian sports medicine physician Mark Tarnopolsky, MD, PhD, suggests that a person can slow the speed at which they age by exercising regularly. Dr. Tarnopolsky presented his research titled, "Exercise as a Countermeasure for Aging: From Mice to Humans" today at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). Dr. Tarnopolsky discussed how regular exercise not only improves the quality of life but can also extend a person's lifespan by up to five years.
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley asked legislators in her third State of the State address Wednesday to overhaul how public schools are funded, improve crumbling roads, and make prisons a safer place for those who guard the most violent offenders. She pledged to work to improve residents' health, especially in rural areas, without expanding Medicaid. For example, she said, next year the state's Medicaid agency will begin fully reimbursing rural hospitals for uncompensated care.
Cardiogenesis Corporation, today announced that it has submitted an IDE (Investigational Device Exemption) to the Food and Drug Administration to initiate a safety and feasibility trial for its PHOENIX System in patients with refractory angina. The PHOENIX handpiece is the first device specifically designed to allow physician-directed tissue stimulation and injections of biologic or pharmacologic agents to pre-determined areas of myocardium.
