Commit 2B Fit®, a school-based program to promote overall childhood wellness, received Honorable Mention in statewide Exemplary Practices in Childhood Obesity in Florida Award, presented by the Florida Initiative for Children's HealthCare Quality (FLICHQ). FLICHQ, evaluated programs around the state according to its "five I's: Impact, Inclusion, Improvability, Implementation and Innovation."
More and more people, particularly older people, are suffering from osteoarthritis due to wear and tear on their joints. This primarily affects the knee and hip joints but also the spine. In earlier studies, scientists at MedUni Vienna Department of Orthopaedics showed that raised levels of certain proteins, so-called galectins, and their docking sites are found in patients with osteoarthritis.
Intrexon Corporation, a privately held life sciences company focused on modular DNA control systems for biotherapeutics and other industry sectors, today announced the purchase of assets and operations of Avalon Pharmaceutical, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Clinical Data, Inc.
Nearly half of foodborne illnesses in the U.S. from 1998 through 2008 have been attributed to contaminated fresh produce. Prevention and control of bacterial contamination on fresh produce is critical to ensure food safety. The current strategy remains industrial washing of the product in water containing chlorine. However, due to sanitizer ineffectiveness there is an urgent need to identify alternative antimicrobials, particularly those of natural origin, for the produce industry.
Researchers at the University of Southern California have identified two molecules that may be more effective cancer killers than are currently available on the market.
