SAFC Pharma®, a business segment of SAFC®, a member of the Sigma-Aldrich® Group, today announced that its Pharmorphix® Solid State Research Laboratories in Cambridge, UK, have installed a new single crystal X-ray diffraction system. The Oxford Diffraction SuperNova(TM) system, which can determine the crystal structures from the most challenging crystal samples, is the first industrial installation of this state-of-the-art instrumentation anywhere in the world.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) today announced $13 million in new grants to help state and local courts offer treatment and recovery support instead of incarceration for individuals who are in a court system due to mental health or substance use disorders.
Previous cancer research has revealed that women are less likely than men to suffer from non-sex specific cancers such as cancer of the colon, pancreas and stomach. Scientists theorized that perhaps this trend was due to a protecting effect created by female hormones, such as estrogen, that help prevent tumors from forming. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri have found evidence suggesting that the male hormone testosterone may actually be a contributing factor in the formation of colon cancer tumors.
A U.S. clinical study is just getting under way that, if successful, could lead to a non-surgical "cure" for the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia. The study is evaluating a new type of cryogenic catheter co-developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
