Patients with tuberculosis in the West African country of Senegal who participated in an intervention program that included improved communication with health personnel and community involvement had higher cure and treatment completion rates, according to a study in the January 24/31 issue of JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association.
The gonad is well known to be important for reproduction but also affects animal life span. Removal of germ cells - the sperm and egg producing cells - increases longevity of the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms were a mystery. Now scientists at the Cologne-based Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, have discovered that germ cell removal flips a "molecular switch" that extends the life span by using components of a "developmental clock".
Delcath Systems, Inc., which is testing its proprietary treatment system for metastatic cancers to the liver, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") will allow the Company to initiate an Expanded Use – Intermediate Size Population protocol for the hepatic arterial infusion of melphalan with venous filtration via the Delcath PHP System™ for patients with ocular and cutaneous melanoma metastatic to the liver.
Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego examining 14 years of hospital admissions data conclude that the fine particles in wildfire smoke can be several times more harmful to human respiratory health than particulate matter from other sources such as car exhaust.
