Accelerated research findings leading to potentially significant new treatments for fragile X syndrome will be presented to nearly 1,000 family members and professionals at the 12th International Fragile X Conference in Dearborn July 21-25.
Europe is at the forefront of acknowledging the importance of patient safety and risk management. Eight to 10 percent of patients in the region are subjected to healthcare-associated infections and medication or prescription errors. Around 30 to 40 percent of these issues are preventable, and healthcare institutions have rolled out several initiatives for reporting and learning systems, as well as patient safety directives. Denmark in particular has shown considerable progress, followed closely by the U.K. and France.
Such disputes between hospitals and church authorities appear to be arising because of a confluence of factors: Economic pressures are spurring greater consolidation in the hospital industry, prompting religiously affiliated institutions to take over or merge with secular ones, imposing church directives on them.
After a major review of scientific information, six leading tobacco research and policy experts have concluded that a nicotine reduction strategy should be an urgent research priority because of its potential to profoundly reduce the death and disease from tobacco use. Their findings were published today in the journal Tobacco Control.
Organ donation after circulatory death (DCD), in which transplant organs are taken from donors after ay period of no blood circulation or oxygenation, is often considered inferior to donation after brain death, in which circulation and oxygenation are maintained until organs are removed for transplantation. Currently, the use of livers from DCD donors remains controversial, particularly with donors with advanced age.
