Today is the last day of competition at the Special Olympics Minnesota's 2010 Summer Games. Volleyball competition will take place on the third floor of the University of Minnesota's Recreation Center (1906 University Avenue SE) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and tennis competition will be held at Life Time Fitness in Lakeville (18425 Dodd Boulevard) from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. In addition, artistic gymnastics competition will start at 2 p.m. and conclude at 5:30 p.m. at Mini-Hops Gymnastics Club in Minnetonka (131 Cheshire Lane, Suite 100).
Researchers examined three sets of surveillance data and found that of the estimated 1.2 million persons in the United States living with the human immunodeficiency virus, 942,000 persons were aware of their infection. More than three-quarters of those were "linked to care" and among HIV-infected adults in care, "45 percent received prevention counseling, and 89 percent were prescribed antiretroviral therapy."
Scientists have used a genetically engineered vaccine to successfully eradicate high-grade precancerous cervical lesions in nearly one-half of women who received the vaccine in a clinical trial. The goal, say the scientists, was to find nonsurgical ways to treat precancerous lesions caused by HPV.
Pathwork Diagnostics, Inc, a privately held molecular diagnostics company focused on oncology, today announced the closing of its $30 million Series C financing. Led by Alta Partners, the financing included participation from the company's existing investors: Abingworth, Advent Venture Partners, Novus Ventures, Prospect Venture Partners and Venrock.
