During the Fifth Decennial International Conference on Healthcare-Associated Infections, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology awarded their first Partnership in Prevention Award to the National Guard Health Affairs in Saudi Arabia.
AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest global AIDS organization which currently provides medical care and services to more than 127,000 individuals in 22 countries worldwide, will mark International Condom Day—an informal holiday observed in conjunction with Valentine's Day, February 14th—with innovative and educational free condom distribution and safer sex awareness events as well as media campaigns held in 32 cities in 13 countries around the world that will be taking place over the days and nights around the weekend holiday.
A new experimental method permits the X-ray analysis of amyloids, a class of large, filamentous biomolecules which are an important hallmark of diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Use of bioprosthetic heart valves has dramatically increased (from 18% in 1991 to 59% in 2003), mainly in older patients with comorbidities. This is due to the increased risk of bleeding complications associated with lifelong use of anticoagulation for mechanical prostheses.
