Johns Hopkins researchers examine the 20-year decline in male circumcision rates and assert it could raise medical costs related to sexually transmitted diseases and other health problems.
Launer's team used brain volume as a measure of accelerated brain aging. Brain volume losses occur during normal aging, but in this study, larger amounts of brain volume loss could indicate brain diseases.
An experimental drug aimed at treating a common liver disease showed promising results and potential problems in a multicenter clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health. The FLINT study found that people with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) who took obeticholic acid (OCA) had improved liver health during that period, including decreased inflammation and fat in the liver and decreased body weight versus people receiving a placebo. OCA was also associated with increases in itching and total cholesterol.
Dan Ross, founder and president of Med-Vision, a Tampa-based medical consulting company, asserts that the Senate Finance Committee's proposal to impose a 40 percent tax on individuals in "gold-plated, Cadillac" health insurance plans would be best described as a tax on groups of the chronically ill.
Roche announced today that it has received FDA approval for the cobas HIV-1 viral load test by the United States Food and Drug Administration for use on the cobas 6800 and cobas 8800 Systems. This HIV-1 viral load test is part of the next generation of Roche viral load tests, which clinicians use to manage the disease and treatment of patients infected with HIV-1.
