A new blood glucose monitoring (BGM) system from Bayer, the CONTOUR Next EZ meter and CONTOUR Next test strips, proved easy to use and highly accurate in the hands of intended users - patients and their healthcare professionals (HCPs) - according to a clinical study presented at the American Diabetes Association 72nd Scientific Sessions in Philadelphia, PA.
Scientists at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Georgia Tech have found that modulating blood-forming stem cells' stiffness could possibly facilitate mobilization procedures used for stem cell-based transplants.
Kidney disease is a growing public health problem, with approximately half a million individuals in the United States requiring dialysis treatments to replace the function of their failed kidneys. The problem is particularly acute among African-Americans, whose rates of kidney disease are four times higher than those of European Americans.
"Nearly a half-century after U.S. cigarette packs were emblazoned with their first, modest warning, 'Caution: Cigarette Smoking May be Hazardous to Your Health,' the Food and Drug Administration - at Congress' behest - is … requiring tobacco companies to print painful images, such as that of a man smoking through a hole in his throat or of a lip eroded by cancer and a mouthful of rotting teeth, right on their cigarette packs," the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Nearly ten percent of all cases of depression are so severe that the patients do not respond to any established treatment method. Targeted stimulation of areas in the brain using a type of "brain pacemaker" has recently raised hopes: According to initial studies, half of patients with the most severe depression treated in this manner see a significant improvement in mood.
