The Australian Federal Government scrapped the funding to the Australian National University's Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) program. This group helps Australia's response to major disease outbreak and will be disbanded at the end of next year. According to Emeritus Professor Robert Douglas who founded this program, this has been responsible for Australia's response to serious epidemic outbreaks in the past.
The Spanish flu outbreak of 1918 killed between 30 and 50 million people. In the infected patients, the ultimate cause of death was acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This fatal condition is a massive reaction of the body during which the lung becomes severely damaged. ARDS can be induced by various bacterial and viral infections, but also by chemical agents.
A new scientific review of the most current research shows the link between eating oatmeal and cholesterol reduction to be stronger than when the FDA initially approved the health claim's appearance on food labels in 1997.
RTI Biologics Inc. (RTI), the Florida-based processor of orthopedic, dental, hernia and other biologic implants, has donated a sterilized dermis allograft, Matrix HD™, to treat an eight-year old patient with a rare skin disease called recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (EB).
Insurance officials are asking the Obama administration to make clear who is responsible financially if people who get federal subsidies to buy health insurance don't pay their premiums.
