In research published in the open access journal PLoS Medicine this week, John Danesh of the University of Cambridge and colleagues find that interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels (a type of protein produced by inflammation, attracting cells of the immune system to the site of injury) are associated with coronary heart disease.
BioTrends Research Group, Inc. is pleased to announce the publication of a new syndicated report, TreatmentTrends: Noninfectious Uveitis. This report, based on feedback gathered in an on-line survey completed by 72 retinal specialists in June/July 2010, addresses the medical management of noninfectious uveitis (anterior, intermediate, posterior and panuveitis) and referral/co-management patterns between retinal specialists and other specialties.
The Joint West Africa Research Group began a study today designed to identify cases of suspected severe infectious disease at medical centers in West Africa. The study is being led by the U.S. Military HIV Research Program of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
Scientists have concluded that there are no proven benefits for toothpaste containing activated charcoal and that it may actually increase the risk of tooth decay and staining.
As a tumor grows, its cancerous cells ramp up an energy-harvesting process to support its hasty development. This process, called autophagy, is normally used by a cell to recycle damaged organelles and proteins, but is also co-opted by cancer cells to meet their increased energy and metabolic demands.
