One of the biggest questions hanging over the health-care system is how many young Americans will sign up for coverage once the Affordable Care Act begins to phase in this October. If too few buy insurance on the markets that the government is creating, insurance companies would be stuck covering primarily the old and the sick. They would have to pay out more per customer.
A research review carried out by the HRB Centre for Primary Care Research, based in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and published in this month's edition of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) has focused on how we can improve care and outcomes for patients with multimorbidity (co-existence of two or more long-terms health conditions in an individual).
Clinicians at Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Sick Children are now able to scan patients' hearts in just one heartbeat thanks to the installation of GE Healthcare's Revolution* CT. The technology's ability to freeze the heart's motion helps to produce high quality diagnostic images, even for patients with erratic or high heart rates which may have led to poor quality images in the past. This helps reduce the need for invasive examination procedures and allows for quick and confident diagnoses of heart disease.
"Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told a U.S. House panel Wednesday that the Obama administration is willing to negotiate how health overhaul legislation is paid for, but not whether it is paid for," according to the Dow Jones Newswires.
