University of Illinois engineers are bringing a touch of color to glucose monitoring. The researchers developed a new continuous glucose monitoring material that changes color as glucose levels fluctuate, and the wavelength shift is so precise that doctors and patients may be able to use it for automatic insulin dosing - something not possible using current point measurements like test strips.
Advanced colon cancer often spreads widely and may not respond to standard chemotherapy. In such a case, a novel combination of drugs and flexible dosing may help achieve a better outlook, as demonstrated by several new studies.
The attempt includes collecting and connecting terabytes of patient medical records from every patient recently treated at one of New York's major hospital centers. Meanwhile in Kansas, a council discusses ways to regulate so-called "secondary use" of patient health data.
Around half of the global population is chronically infected with the stomach bacterium Helicobacter pylori, almost 1 percent of whom go on to develop gastric adenocarcinoma, one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Usually it takes many decades for the cancer to develop, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly how it is linked to an infection.
A randomised trial in this week's issue of THE LANCET shows how a vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV) infection could potentially reduce the global incidence of cervical cancer.
