In December 2005, Seung-Hui Cho was found to present "an imminent danger to himself as a result of mental illness" by a special judge. This should have barred him from owning a gun under federal law, 18 U.S.C. section 922(g), but, because his mental health records were never sent to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, in March 2007 Cho was able to purchase the guns he used the following month to shoot and kill 32 people at Virginia Tech.
"The two former owners of City of Angels Medical Center will pay $10 million as part of a consent judgment over allegations that they performed unnecessary medical work on homeless people recruited from skid row shelters as part of a Medicare fraud scheme." Authorities alleged that the center would charge the government for the treatments (Grad, 1/26).
A new study at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh confirms how college challenges both mind and body, by demonstrating that lonely first-year students mounted a weaker immune response to the flu shot than did other students. The study appears in the May issue of Health Psychology, which is published by the American Psychological Association (APA).
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) has developed a new breast cancer diagnostic method, and is now carrying out first tests on non-preserved human tissue in conjunction with the Kantonsspital Baden AG. This new method should be able to reveal structures that cannot be seen using conventional mammography. Standard procedures only determine the extent to which X-rays are attenuated by various tissue structures.
