Chemists say they have identified a gene that appears to play a key role in the development of type 1 diabetes

In the current study, the researchers focused on the formation of the MIF protein (macrophage migration inhibitory factor), a proinflammatory protein that they showed in previous studies is elevated in diabetic animals and may be involved in the cascade of immunological events that leads to the destruction of the pancreas and the subsequent onset of type 1 diabetes.

Auriculotherapy may help in managing chronic constipation

Nearly 1 in 6 adults worldwide may suffer from chronic constipation and, over time, the disorder can cause serious complications. Auriculotherapy, a form of acupuncture that involves stimulating targeted points on the outer ear, may help in managing constipation.

Lab made urinary tube going strong after six years of transplant

In a scientific breakthrough, five boys who were unable to urinate due to pelvic injury were cured for up to six years after getting new lab-grown urethras or urinary tubes that connect with the bladder. This breakthrough comes from Wake Forest University researcher Anthony Atala. It was in 2006 that the team reported the first successful implantation of lab-grown urinary bladders into humans. Today six years after the operation all of the boys continue to do well, with normal or near-normal urinary flow. The boy first treated is now 16 years old and received his lab-grown urethra over six years ago.

Johns Hopkins researchers link a gene to melanoma growth and spread

Using a small noncoding RNA, microRNA 211, and tools that track the stability and decay of the protein-coding and noncoding RNAs in lab-grown melanoma cells, a team led by a Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center researcher identified highly unstable RNA molecules in human melanomas, including a novel miR-211 target gene DUSP3.

Physician Assistant: A physician assistant is a person who has successfully completed an accredited education program for physician assistant, is licensed by the state and is practicing within the scope of that license. Physician assistants are formally trained to perform many of the routine, time-consuming tasks a physician can do. In some states, they may prescribe medications. They take medical histories, perform physical exams, order lab tests and x-rays, and give inoculations. Most states require that they work under the supervision of a physician.
