The National Comprehensive Cancer Network announces that it has issued new NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology for Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Oncology. AYA patients are defined in the guidelines as individuals 15 to 39 years of age at initial cancer diagnosis.
Major amputation is often selected over infrainguinal bypass in patients with severe systemic comorbidities because of a presumed decrease in risk of perioperative morbidity and mortality. To investigate this presumption, researchers from the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston undertook a risk-adjusted comparison of early postoperative morbidity and mortality of high-risk patients undergoing infrainguinal bypass and major amputation.
In a study investigating immune response in cancer, researchers from Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., and the University of South Florida have found that interaction between the immune system's antigen-specific CD4 T cells and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) - cells that play a major role in cancer-related immune suppression - dramatically change the nature of MDSC-mediated suppression. By contrast, the same effect was not observed when MDSCs interacted with the immune system's CD8 T cells.
