As the American population ages and dementia is on the rise, The Hastings Center is embarking on pathbreaking research to explore foundational questions associated with the dementia trajectory and the concerns of persons facing this terminal condition.
In a thrust against the major problem of counterfeit medicines sold in developing countries, which causes thousands of illnesses and deaths annually, scientists today described development of a simple, paper-strip test that people could use to identify counterfeit versions of one of the most-frequently faked medicines in the world.
The Wall Street Journal profiles the case of a man infected with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) who is being detained in South Texas after a "three-month odyssey through 13 countries - from his homeland of Nepal through South Asia, Brazil, Mexico, and finally into Texas - show[ing] the way in which dangerous new strains of the disease can migrate across the world unchecked."
The resulting increased blood and oxygen flow to the pre-frontal cortex may explain the effects, suggest the researchers.
