SeraCare optimizes ACCURUN 341 Nucleic Acid Positive controls

SeraCare Life Sciences, Inc. today announced that the Company has developed a new series of controls in its ACCURUN portfolio to monitor and validate molecular diagnostic test performance for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (CT/NG). Through collaboration with instrument and reagent manufacturers, SeraCare has optimized the ACCURUN 341 Nucleic Acid Positive controls specifically for use with the three most popular assays currently on the market; the Gen-Probe APTIMA Combo 2 Assay, the Roche COBAS AMPLICOR CT/NG Test, and the Becton, Dickinson BD ProbeTec ET System.

Fever, diarrhoea or vomiting do not prevent British parents from sending children to school

Bupa has revealed that fever, diarrhoea or vomiting are not enough to stop British parents sending their offspring to school. New research from the Bupa 'How Are You Britain?' report reveals half of all parents in the UK admit to sending their children to school or nursery when they are feeling poorly and this isn't just limited to the sniffles, with 17% saying contagious illnesses such as diarrhoea and vomiting (13%) are not reason enough to keep their children at home.

Stents for blocked brain arteries may not be as successful in prolonging survival as believed: Study

A study out this Wednesday says that insertion of an artery-opening device called a stent into the brain to improve blood flow to prevent a second stroke may do more harm than managing high-risk patients with drugs and lifestyle changes. Blocked brain arteries caused by the build-up of fatty deposits called plaque account for more than 50,000 of the 795,000 strokes occurring in the United States each year. Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States.
