Dementia patients treated with neuroleptic drugs instead of anti-dementia medication: Study

Demented patients are often treated nonspecifically with psychoactive medications. Neuroleptic drugs are given even when they are not specifically indicated, as Tomislav Majic and his colleagues from the Charité Hospital, Berlin, show in the current issue of Deutsches Ärzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2010; 107[18]: 320-7).

New Mexico Behavioral Health Collaborative will decimate rural psychiatric medical care, say doctors

New Mexico's healthcare disparity might just get worse - a hard concept to fathom given that the State has some of the most underserved areas in the country. The New Mexico Behavioral Health Collaborative, started by Governor Bill Richardson in 2004 to address "the way in which the [behavioral health] services are paid for and delivered," is coming under heavy fire from doctors around the State. THADA gene plays prominent role in transfer of heredity type 2 diabetes from mother to child

Research from Lund University in Sweden can explain why type 2 diabetes is inherited to a greater extent from an individual's mother. The heredity of a previously known risk gene, THADA, has proven to be dominant if it comes from the mother, whereas it has little or no effect on the child's risk of disease if it originates from the father.
