vRad stockholders approve merger agreement for acquisition by Providence affiliate

Virtual Radiologic Corporation ("vRad"), a national radiology practice and a leader in the development of radiologist workflow technology, and Providence Equity Partners, a leading global private equity firm that manages over $22 billion in equity capital, announced that earlier today vRad's stockholders approved and adopted the merger agreement providing for the acquisition of vRad by an affiliate of Providence. The transaction is valued at approximately $294 million and was completed today.

Certain anti-nausea medications used after operation could increase risk for irregular heartbeat

Certain commonly prescribed anti-nausea medications given to patients during or after an operation could increase their risk of developing an irregular heartbeat, new research has found.

Androgen deficiency linked to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) in collaboration with researchers from Lahey Clinic Northshore, Peabody, Mass., believe that androgen deficiency might be the underlying cause for a variety of common clinical conditions, including diabetes, erectile dysfunction, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease (CVD). These findings appear in the September/October issue of the Journal of Andrology.

Smoking may increase risk of complications, death after colorectal procedures

​Infection, pneumonia, blood clots and kidney failure are all possible complications after any major surgery. A new study shows that smoking boosts the risk of such complications following some of the most common colorectal procedures, including surgery for colon cancer, diverticulitis or inflammatory bowel disease.
