Two tax provisions in the health-care bill voted on by the House Ways and Means Committee earlier this summer have gained significant attention. One would impose a surtax on high-income earners. The other would force individuals (or their employers) who do not have approved health-insurance plans to pay a tax penalty. But there are other "revenue provisions" in the bill that also deserve a close look (James M. Peaslee, 8/25).
Children exposed to cocaine in the womb face serious consequences from the drug, but fortunately not in certain critical physical and cognitive areas as previously believed, according to a new comprehensive review of research on the subject from scientists at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd yesterday announced Australia's first ever men's health policy called the "National Male Health Policy". He said in the announcement during a visit to the Whittlesea Men's Shed in Victoria, "They either think that they're invincible that they can just tough it out…'They don't like talking about it usually, and frankly, the problem with all that is it makes it really hard to deal with men's health problems before they become too serious."
