UC San Francisco researchers have discovered how a mutation in a gene regulator called the TERT promoter - the third most common mutation among all human cancers and the most common mutation in the deadly brain cancer glioblastoma - confers "immortality" on tumor cells, enabling the unchecked cell division that powers their aggressive growth.
Trius Therapeutics, Inc. announced today the issuance of Patent Number 7,816,379, entitled "Oxazolidinone Derivatives," by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The new patent, which is exclusively licensed to Trius, protects the Company's lead investigational drug, torezolid phosphate (TR-701), currently in Phase 3 clinical testing in patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI).
Commonly used ICU risk scores can be "repurposed" as continuous markers of severity of illness in critically ill patients-providing ongoing updates on changes in the patient's condition and risk of death, according to a study in the March issue of Critical Care Medicine, official journal of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. The journal is published by Wolters Kluwer.
Taking the recession's impact and reform together, the Obama years' Medicaid expansion (assuming the president and reform survive) will come to about 26 percent, higher than the Clinton years, no doubt, but significantly smaller than the increases experienced under either of the Bushes.
Switching to tenofovir may stave further kidney and bone impairment in patients with hepatitis B virus-related chronic hepatitis taking adefovir-based therapy, retrospective study findings suggest.
