Johns Hopkins researchers will present results showing that tighter, dual testing standards work better for accurately distinguishing between new and old cases of HIV.
On Monday, July 26th, U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, Jim Greenwood, president and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), and Christopher Molineaux, president of Pennsylvania Bio, will host a roundtable discussion on the new Therapeutic Discovery Project Program. This new program offers small biotech companies (less than 250 employees) a tax credit or grant to encourage investment in new medical therapies for life-changing diseases.
Heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, stroke, and unintentional injuries cause nearly 900,000 premature deaths in the US each year. A recent study showed that 20–40% of deaths from each of these causes could be prevented.
Learning and memory are processes that link experience with behavior and therefore play central roles in our daily experience. That there exists a physical basis for these processes seems at first hard to imagine-except for the fact that physical disruptions in the brain, such as stroke or disease, can make them go wrong.
The Los Angeles Times: "The Obama administration is sending $1-million grants to state insurance regulators to help increase oversight of rising health insurance premiums, a key step in implementing the new healthcare law. The grants announced Monday, which went to all but five states, will enable many to expand public access to information about rate hikes and to hire experts to review what insurers want to charge.
