The easy accessibility of the eye and the established link between specific genetic defects and ocular disorders offer hope for using gene therapy to provide long-term therapeutic benefit. Two reports in the current issue of Human Gene Therapy, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., describe the effective replacement of a human gene to preserve photoreceptor function in a mouse model of severe retinal degeneration. The articles are available free online.
A new study reveals that providing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) for a longer period of time could actually harm certain patients. "We found that extra CPR didn't help and, in fact, in some patients it was not a good thing. It would make it worse," said Dr. Ian Stiell, lead author of a paper published in the Sept. 1 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. "Our study showed that there's no reason to do two minutes of CPR or to delay defibrillation."
ImmunoGen, Inc., a biotechnology company that develops novel anticancer therapeutics using its antibody-drug conjugate technology, announced today the decision to stop the IMGN901 Phase II SCLC study, following the recommendation of the trial's independent Data Monitoring Committee.
