Loyola University Health System's Pastoral Care Department is helping bring these simple, but significant comforts into the hospital to people dealing with some of life's greatest challenges. One of the main efforts is providing hand-made fleece blankets to patients and families who need extra reassurance.
There are now 53,000 adults living with HIV/AIDS in the UK, over a quarter of whom (14,300) remain unaware of their infection according to the Health Protection Agency's annual report on HIV.
For pacemakers and other implantable medical devices there are three key factors: extreme reliability, small size, and long longevity. In the EU project DeSyRe, researchers tackle these issues with a new approach: building a reliable system on unreliable components. Ioannis Sourdis, project leader, today explains the DeSyRe's approach in a tutorial on "Hardware and software design and verification for safety critical electronic systems" during the DATE 2012 conference in Dresden.
According to a new study from the UK, transplanted kidneys from patients whose hearts have stopped perform just as well as those from patients who are brain-dead but still alive. The former have been earlier considered to be weaker since the heart had stopped pumping blood into them before transplant. The study was published online by the The Lancet.
