Manchester scientists have shown that a new drug inhibits the growth of tumours in the lab and that its effectiveness is improved by combining it with radiotherapy - suggesting a new approach that could be used in the clinic.
Using a computer model of the eye, Stitzel and colleagues investigated possible injury mechanisms in the eyes of elderly individuals and the effects of lens stiffness on injury prediction by the model. The new data document that the risk of certain types of eye injury increases with age.
Acute hemorrhagic anemia can decrease blood flow and oxygen supply to brain, and affect its physiological function. Detecting changes in brain function in patients with acute hemorrhagic anemia is helpful for preventing neurological complications and evaluating therapeutic effects.
The discovery in common brewer's yeast of a new, infectious, misfolded protein - or prion - by University of Illinois at Chicago molecular biologists raises new questions about the roles played by these curious molecules, often associated with degenerative brain diseases like "mad cow" and its human counterpart, Creutzfeldt-Jakob.
Leaders of the Institute for Clinical Quality and Value (ICQV) have officially dissolved the organization effective June 30, 2011 and endorsed the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) as the best venue for healthcare leaders to share ideas, experiences, and best practices in the creation of structures, programs, and initiatives that improve clinical quality and efficiency.
