Chagas disease, caused by infection with a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi (T cruzi), causes chronic heart disease in about one third of those infected.
Approximately 85,000 HIV-positive people in Burma, also known as Myanmar, are in need of antiretroviral treatment (ART) and cannot access it "due to a lack of funding, despite renewed international engagement with the government amid a wave of political reform, according to a report released Wednesday" by the medical aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), the Associated Press/CBS News reports.
Researchers examined heart risk factors in family members of cardiac patients and found that those who provided all or most of a patient's care had higher levels of risk factors for heart disease than non-caregivers and those who reported higher caregiver strain after six months were more likely to be depressed than those who provided less or no care.
NuVasive, Inc., a medical device company focused on developing products for minimally disruptive surgical treatments for the spine, announced today that Aetna changed its spinal surgery policy to include coverage for the eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion, or XLIF procedure, published on February 26, 2010, a reversal from its previous policy that labeled XLIF as experimental and investigational.
