Researchers in MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering believe they have pinpointed a pathway by which arsenic may be contaminating the drinking water in Bangladesh, a phenomenon that has puzzled scientists, world health agencies and the Bangladeshi government for nearly 30 years. The research suggests that human alteration to the landscape, the construction of villages with ponds, and the adoption of irrigated agriculture are responsible for the current pattern of arsenic concentration underground.
President Barack Obama said he is "very comfortable" with the Food and Drug Administration rule announced this week to make the so-called morning after pill available without a prescription to women and girls who are at least 15 - younger than the current limit of 17.
W. L. Gore & Associates announced the treatment of the first European patients with the new 25 cm GORE® VIABAHN® Endoprosthesis with PROPATEN Bioactive Surface, the longest length stent-graft available in Europe. Piotr Kasprzak, from the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Klinikum der Universität in Regensburg, Germany, and Thomas Zeller, MD, from the Department of Angiology at the Herz-Zentrum in Bad Krozingen, Germany successfully treated patients using the Gore device.
Flu season is upon us and while getting the nasty bug is bad news, the good news is it's now possible to treat the severe form of the virus more effectively, according to a Ryerson University researcher. Though Canada is not expecting a pandemic flu season this winter Health Canada reports that about 4,000 to 8,000 Canadians die each year from flu-related pneumonia.
After a spate of random shootings and gun homicides, Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, along with doctors and medical professionals, convened at Children's Memorial Hospital to send an urgent plea to state lawmakers to require background checks on all handgun sales in order save lives and reduce escalating health care costs related to gun violence.
