A new study has shown that elderly who are regulars at the cinema, theatre or spend time at cultural meets and activities can protect themselves from depression. The study results were published in the latest issue of the journal British Journal of Psychiatry.
The metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of metabolic abnormalities with abdominal obesity (increased waist circumference) at its centre. Although all forms of obesity have a negative impact on human health, metabolic syndrome describes a set of particularly adverse biochemical changes accompanying (abdominal) obesity.
Contrary to the prevailing view, the hormone leptin, which is critical for normal food intake and metabolism, appears to regulate bone mass and suppress appetite by acting mainly through serotonin pathways in the brain, according to a recent study published in Cell by Yale School of Medicine researchers and colleagues at Columbia University. This new finding contradicts the view that leptin acts primarily in the hypothalamus.
Just as Senate Finance Committee action is heating up, tempers on both sides of the aisle are flaring, as senators stake out positions and weigh political implications of their positions.
People with psoriatic arthritis may initially present with either psoriasis or arthritis as the first symptom/sign of this illness. Now, a new study presented at the 2019 ACR/ARP Annual Meeting shows that the age at which psoriasis develops is a key predictor of which shows up first. Early-onset psoriasis is not strongly associated with arthritis while late-onset psoriasis is.
