A Danish study provides 10-year absolute risk estimates for dementia specific to age, sex and common variation in the APOE gene, which may help identify high-risk individuals who potentially could benefit from early targeted prevention.
Kolltan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that it has raised an additional $5 million to close its Series A preferred stock financing at $40 million. Participants in the Series A financing, originally announced in January 2009, include Purdue Pharma, L.P., HBM BioCapital L.P., the Pritzker/Vlock family, and other substantial private life science investors.
According to recent surveys more and more adolescents need bariatric surgery for morbid obesity. This procedure was earlier reserved only for adults. Researchers say that from 2005 to 2007, the rate of gastric banding has jumped nearly seven-fold among youths aged 13 to 20. The process involves placement of a band around the upper part of the stomach using a laparoscope. The study appeared in the journal Pediatrics.
The Global CEO Initiative (CEOi) on Alzheimer's Disease and the New York Academy of Sciences today convened representatives from industry, academia, government and nonprofits to launch the development of a Global Alzheimer's Platform (GAP), designed to reduce the time and costs of Alzheimer's clinical trials, develop an infrastructure that promotes innovation, and assure international collaboration.
A new partnership between The University of Texas at Arlington Libraries and Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth will mean new high-tech healthcare learning opportunities for pediatric patients.
