Schwertz Distinguished Professor of Life Sciences, and Robert Kass, professor of statistics and machine learning, have received a $930,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to apply biological and statistical neuroscience approaches in order to create a better overall understanding of how neurons encode information.
The Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease today hosted an important health observance briefing to raise awareness of the co-occurrence of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD), "National Diabetes Heart Connection Day."
"Ten years after world leaders set the most ambitious goals ever to tackle global poverty, they are meeting again to try to spur action to meet the targets by the 2015 deadline - which the U.N. says will be difficult, if not impossible, in some cases," the Associated Press reports. More than 140 world leaders are scheduled to participate in the three-day U.N. Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which kicks off Monday.
Researchers of the Colorectal Cancer research group of Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute, led by Dr. Víctor Moreno, and linked to the Catalan Institute of Oncology, the University of Barcelona and the Epidemiology and Public Health CIBER, have issued the first predictive risk model of colon and rectal cancer based on Spanish data that combines genetic and lifestyle information.
Massachusetts' Institute of Technology (MIT) at its Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) has developed a device that can monitor patients with the highly infective COVID-19 remotely and thus prevent the spread of the infection to healthcare workers.
