Recent research indicates that despite decades of progress, fewer Americans are now considered "low risk" for heart disease compared to years past. Adding fuel to the fire, a new study is making headlines with the alarming statistic that 7 in 10 obese teens already have at least one risk factor for heart disease.
NPR's "Shots" blog examines the "test and treat" approach to HIV care and prevention, which "relies on the fact that taking HIV drugs dramatically reduces a person's risk of transmitting the virus to others," and, "[a]s more and more people are put on medication, the epidemic theoretically should fizzle out." The blog continues, "Test and treat sounds good on paper, but some doctors and policymakers have doubts about its feasibility on a large scale."
South Korea has opened a bank in Seoul that will create and supply new lines of embryonic stem cells for research around the world.
Noting "hundreds of global health researchers, policymakers, civil society leaders, program managers, health practitioners, and newborn champions [are gathering] in Johannesburg, South Africa, this week at the Global Newborn Health Conference to discuss how to improve the poor statistics on newborn health," Gary Darmstadt, head of the Family Health Division of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Cyril Engmann, a senior program officer for neonatal health at the foundation, write in the organization's "Impatient Optimists" blog, "This collective analysis and effort should ensure that all aspects of newborn health are included in this plan."
