ABC News profiles Edna Adan, a 75-year-old former U.N. diplomat responsible for building the first maternity hospital in her country of Somalia. "I could have retired and lived somewhere else in the world, but I think I would have found it difficult to live with myself," Adan told ABC News, according to the news service. In 1991, she "cashed in her pension from the World Health Organization, sold all of her jewelry and belongings - including her favorite car, a Mercedes - and spent $300,000 of her own money to build a hospital," the news service writes.
Agilent Technologies Inc. today announced the winners of the 2011 eMerging Insights grant program: Dr. Michael J. MacCoss of the University of Washington and Dr. Peter J. Park of Harvard University. Each will be awarded $75,000 toward their ongoing research on open source data-integration tools.

"From simply a public health issue, I put it very, very low," Cornell University food safety expert Martin Wiedmann said of the level of concern about mad cow disease. Maintaining confidence in exports fuels the nation's monitoring of the beef supply as much as continuing safety concerns, he said.

The solution – M3 Messages™ – takes a new approach to developing valuable, long-term, online connections that help doctors stay current on advances in oncology.

As the body's outermost line of defense against microbes, the skin provides important protection against potentially toxic environmental elements. One subset of immune cells, thymus-derived T-cells play an important role in the skin's response to injury, particularly with respect to wound healing.
