Genentech, Inc. has announced that a Special Committee of its Board of Directors unanimously recommended that shareholders reject the unilateral tender offer from Roche to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Genentech not owned by Roche for $86.50 cash per share.
Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers report that radiation therapy alone can reduce prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels below detectable amounts in prostate cancer patients. Patients who have an undetectable level of PSA after therapy have less chance of biochemical failure than other patients and a good chance of being cured.
Through serendipity, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health considerably reduced the toxicity of a potential antibiotic against the most feared drug-resistant bacteria, while also improving its stability in fighting infections.
I chided President Obama this week for his remarks on the Supreme Court and the role of "unelected" judges. The president, wisely, has since chosen to clarify his statement, and express his (correct) view - that courts should be hesitant to overturn acts of Congress - in a much more appropriate way. Now the problematic behavior is coming from the other branch, with a federal appeals court going out of it way to pick a fight with the president. Talk about judicial activism - this is a judicial temper tantrum.
The Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Philadelphia has received a grant award from the First Hospital Foundation in the amount of $40,000. The grant will be used to enhance the VNA's Wound Care Program and will enable the agency to purchase digital cameras so the home visiting clinicians can document patients wound progression and improve wound care delivery.
