Premiums for employer-sponsored family health insurance increased an average of 41 percent across states from 2003 to 2009, more than three times faster than median incomes, according to a new Commonwealth Fund report. Yet, insurance is buying less. The report found that deductibles per person rose 77 percent, on average. Higher premiums plus higher out-of-pocket costs are putting working families' budgets under stress across the country.

Discovery of ‘alarm-clock' gene

Researchers led by Indian-American scientist, Satchidananda Panda at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., said the gene is responsible for starting the body's biological clock from its restful state every morning. They add that this may open avenues in research in insomnia or sleeplessness, aging and chronic illnesses.

NIH awards $6.7M to establish Membrane Protein Structural Biology Consortium

Dr. Michael G. Malkowski, Hauptman-Woodward senior research scientist, has received a $6.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health in support of his work to establish the Membrane Protein Structural Biology Consortium (mpsbc.org) as one of nine centers in the United States responsible for determining membrane protein structures within a larger NIH biology-based initiative.
