Carnegie Mellon University engineers and cognitive neuroscientists have demonstrated that a new high-density EEG can capture the brain's neural activity at a higher spatial resolution than ever before.
Preeclampsia is one of the most common complications to occur during pregnancy, yet its causes are still unknown. A new study involving patients, cell cultures and animal experiments has now shown that those affected by the disease have lower quantities of the placenta's immune protein CD74, and that certain inflammatory factors are higher. These factors disrupt the formation of the placenta and leave the fetus undernourished.
Research led by scientists at UC San Francisco and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has used brain "organoids" — tiny 3D models of human organs that scientists grow in a dish to study disease — to identify root causes of Miller-Dieker Syndrome (MDS), a rare genetic disorder that causes fatal brain malformations.
GenekamBiotechnology AG, which developed the first test for Zika virus detection in January 2016, has developed as one of first company in the world the therapeutic molecule candidate for Zika viruses, which is likely to be the first potential candidate for Zika-virus therapy.
