When dams are built they have an impact not only on the flow of water in the river, but also on the people who live downstream and on the surrounding ecosystems. By placing data from close to 6,500 existing large dams on a highly precise map of the world's rivers, an international team led by McGill University researchers has created a new method to estimate the global impacts of dams on river flow and fragmentation.
BioMed Realty Trust, Inc. today announced that it is under contract to acquire the 307 Westlake Avenue North building in the heart of the burgeoning South Lake Union life science market of Seattle, Washington for approximately $90 million.
Three new spin-offs emerged from Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU) in 2013: SurgVision, Trianta Immunotherapies and Dosimetrics. Thanks to successful innovation management, the Center has transformed excellent research findings into practical applications and given new impulses to the areas of clinical imaging, immunotherapy and radiation dosimetry.
Researchers at Seattle-based Group Health Cooperative and the University of Washington (UW) report that some of the same factors that put women at risk for simple, lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) - as well as some unexpected factors - also make them susceptible to more serious kidney infections.
Aging may seem unavoidable, but that's not necessarily so when it comes to the brain. So say researchers in the April 27th issue of the Cell Press journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences explaining that it is what you do in old age that matters more when it comes to maintaining a youthful brain not what you did earlier in life.
