Athena Diagnostics, a leader in neurological diagnostics, today announced the clinical availability of new genetic tests to aid the detection of several rare neurological disorders, including hereditary neuropathy, neuromuscular disease, epilepsy and certain movement disorders. The lab-developed tests are available through Athena Diagnostics, a business of Quest Diagnostics (NYSE:DGX), the world's leading provider of diagnostic information services.
Several scientific papers with results from one of Europe's largest health surveys of young children with focus on overweight and obesity, the IDEFICS study, have been published the last years. Research at the Nordic School of Public Health NHV reveals that some types of families seem to be underrepresented in the health survey. This knowledge can prove to be valuable when the data is interpreted and can contribute to efficient actions for improved child health.
Reports from several studies have identified a link between height and general cognitive ability, or intelligence, but the mechanisms underlying this association are not well known. Researchers from the University of Helsinki, University of California San Diego and Boston University found that this association is mediated by cortical surface area.
XOMA Ltd., a leader in the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies, announced receipt of a $750,000 milestone payment under its collaboration with AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc.. The milestone payment resulted from AVEO's recent initiation of a Phase 2 clinical trial to evaluate its AV-299 antibody for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. AV-299 is a humanized antibody to hepatocyte growth factor (HGF).
BioMS Medical Corp. today reported that Spectral Diagnostics has received Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Toraymyxin(TM). Spectral Diagnostics and BioMS have entered into a services agreement whereby BioMS will assist Spectral, as required, in its commercialization of Toraymyxin(TM), a therapeutic hemoperfusion device for the treatment of severe sepsis. This approval permits Spectral to initiate its planned pivotal trial for Toraymyxin(TM) in the United States.
