Counsyl, a DNA testing and genetic counseling company, today unveiled significant enhancements to its flagship expanded carrier screening product, Counsyl Foresight Carrier Screen, which uses next-generation sequencing technology to assess whether couples are at-risk for passing down serious genetic conditions to their children.
"Obesity rates worldwide have doubled in the last three decades, even as blood pressure and cholesterol levels have dropped," according to a series of papers published Friday in the Lancet, the Associated Press/New York Times reports (8/25).
Apollo Endosurgery, Inc. announced completion of the first clinical case involving its FlexShears Endoscopic Scissors. The new device was used to cut and remove an obstructing eroded suture from the patient's GI tract in a procedure that embodies the Apollo vision of improving patient care with flexible surgery.
Using an in vitro cell model of Huntington's disease (HD), researchers at Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine have discovered a novel mechanism and potential link between mutant huntingtin, cell loss and cell death or apoptosis in the brain, which is responsible for the devastating effects of this disease. Apoptosis has been proposed as one of the mechanisms leading to neuronal death in HD.
A new method of vaccine design, called the Multiple Antigen Presentation System, may result in vaccines that bring together the benefits of whole-cell and acellular or defined subunit vaccination.
