Two genetic studies expand list of genes connected to major Western health problems

Two recent genetic studies expand the list of genes involved with body fat and body mass index, and their connection to major Western health problems: heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. One study showed that higher body mass index (BMI) caused harmful effects on the risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and inflammation, while another study found gene signals linked to higher levels of body fat metrics, without showing causality.

Foods that protect from Alzheimer's

In a recent study researchers have revealed what we always knew - salads, fish, fruits and nuts are good for us. It says that these food combinations are related to a reduced risk of getting the dreaded brain and memory disease called Alzheimer's disease. This study published in the online edition of the reputed journal Archives of Neurology also says that lesser the amount of high-fat dairy foods like butter etc. and red meats, the lesser is the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Resolving HBV infection does not reduce liver cancer risk

Long-term infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) can cause liver inflammation and increase the risk of liver cancer. Researchers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however, found that resolving HBV infection was not associated with reduced rates of liver cancer.
