Health industry will see more patients with reform; Physicians give mixed reviews

Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson resolve patent disputes through settlement

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced the settlement of more than a dozen lawsuits involving Johnson & Johnson, including the Palmaz-NIR suit. All the disputes involved intellectual property in the interventional cardiology arena. In connection with the settlement, Boston Scientific will make a payment of $716 million to Johnson & Johnson. The settlement payment is within Boston Scientific's existing reserve for the Palmaz-NIR suit and will be made from existing cash on hand.

NINDS: $50 billion spent each year for low back pain

A study by researchers at The George Institute for International Health in Australia found that it is rare for patients presenting to PCPs with acute lower back pain to have previously undiagnosed serious diseases. The most common serious disease cause documented was vertebral fracture, with half of the cases identified at the time of initial consultation.
