With the U.S. poised to reauthorize the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and almost triple its financing over the next five years, a new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation looks at trends in health funding provided by donor governments to low- and middle- income countries.
Think back to middle school biology class, when you learned that boys have an X and a Y chromosome inside each cell, and girls have two X's.
Doctor groups are slamming insurers for increasingly using rankings "to steer patients toward certain physicians based on cost or quality," The Wall Street Journal reports.
"Nearly nine months after the earthquake, more than a million Haitians still live on the streets between piles of rubble. One reason: Not a cent of the $1.15 billion the U.S. promised for rebuilding has arrived," the Associated Press writes in an article examining why this aid has not been delivered.
Researchers from the Peninsula Medical School, working in collaboration with colleagues from Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the University of Brighton, have used a unique collection of pancreas specimens taken from patients who died soon after diagnosis of type 1 diabetes to show that they respond to the ongoing process of destruction by inducing their islet cells to proliferate.
