First-degree relatives of black individuals with early-onset lung cancer have twice the risk of lung cancer than first-degree relatives of white individuals with early-onset lung cancer, according to a study in the June 22/29 issue of JAMA.
A new clinical study of the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research is examining whether an ultrasound evaluation of the inferior vena cava in acute decompensated heart failure with congestion can be implemented in hospitals' everyday routine and also be conducted in a sufficiently large number of patients.
Following the 2010 FDA directive, pharmaceutical manufacturer Glaxo-SmithKline announced this Monday that they have modified the label for diabetes drug rosiglitazone (Avandia). The new label restricts its use to patients already taking it or to those who have failed other antiglycemic drugs.
A study by Hospital for Special Surgery researchers finds that body mass index (BMI) plays a role in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients' ability to achieve a sustained remission. Looking at patients who had received an RA diagnosis within the past 12 months, investigators found that those who were significantly underweight or overweight/obese were the least likely to remain in remission.
Family history of early cardiac events in first degree relatives such as a parent or sibling is a major risk factor, especially for premature events. Currently, data on risks in close relatives of patients with a family history of premature heart attacks, chronic stable angina or peripheral vascular disease are sparse.
