For many women, the side effects of menopause don't call it a day when they do. Between 40 and 60 percent of women in perimenopause and early menopause face issues with sleep because of this physical change. The Allen Institute for Brain Science, in a project led by Stephen Smith, Ph.D., Senior Investigator, has been awarded an $8.7 million, five-year Transformative Research Award from the National Institutes of Health to lead the creation of a publicly accessible model of synapse populations in mouse and human brains.
In a survey by two popular magazines it appears that mums today find it harder to get a good night's sleep, and are getting around 30% less sleep than their own mothers did.
The research, reported online July 21, 2010, in the journal Advanced Materials, provides a promising path towards the development of a new class of metamaterial-inspired implantable biosensors and biodetectors.Metamaterials are artificial electromagnetic composites, typically made of highly conducting metals, whose structures respond to electromagnetic waves in ways that atoms in natural materials do not.
